Alternative Plan: Upgrading a merchant vessel to Naval Auxiliary Ship
Lumut, KLS: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) confirmed that it is cooperating with Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC) Berhad to upgrade a merchant vessel to a naval auxiliary ship. This ship will replace KD Hang Tuah in the Gulf of Aden.
Chief of Malaysian Navy, ADM Abdul Aziz Jaafar, said this at a press conference after the PASKAL enlistment ceremony on 15 Apr.
He said that discussions are underway and a merchant vessel has been selected to undergo upgrading.
MISC Berhad has a variety of merchant vessels, such as offshore vessels with helipads(right).
"The upgraded merchant vessel will replace the naval warship and this will mean using less of the Navy's limited resources."
He said that the merchant vessel that will be upgraded to a naval auxiliary ship must fulfill certain conditions, including having a hangar and lodging for personnel on board.
In any case, he said that discussions between the RMN and MISC Berhad are still ongoing and there are some obstacles in the negotiations.
